How to Be Content in Your Current Season
Hello there.
I am currently in the midst of making some decisions, and when changes are coming, I find it difficult to remain content in the season I’m currently in.
Do you ever feel that way? That you’re so focused on the future and what’s ahead, that you forget to look around and enjoy the moment you’re in?
Throughout my life I’ve struggled with this – I think a bigger bank account or a new job or a different home or a smaller waist size will make me happier. Once I achieve this thing, whatever it is, then I can be content.
But that’s not the definition of contentment, is it? Contentment is defined as “a state of happiness and satisfaction,” to which I’ll add right now. Not in some distant place or time when a certain thing happens. Contentment can be found right now, right where you are.

How to Be Content in Your Current Season
So if that’s the case, how do you find contentment in your current season, even if it’s a difficult one or exciting things are coming up?
Fix your eyes on Jesus.
Isaiah 26:3
3 You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you.
When we look around at the world and start focusing on the desires of our flesh, we lose our peace. The only way that we can truly find peace in this world is by fixing our eyes on Jesus and trusting in Him.
The things of this world steal our joy and tell us that we don’t have enough or aren’t enough to be happy. This is a lie that leads to dissatisfaction, which kills our contentment.
Mourn when you need to mourn.
Job 1:20-22
20 Then Job arose and tore his robe and shaved his head and fell on the ground and worshiped. 21 And he said, “Naked I came from my mother's womb, and naked shall I return. The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.”
22 In all this Job did not sin or charge God with wrong.
I think as Christians it’s sometimes easy to think that contentment means that we should be satisfied with our circumstances at all times. According to Job, this is not the case at all.
Job had so much taken away, and he mourned greatly. What he didn’t do, however, was curse God for his circumstances, but instead praise Him for simply being the Lord. In all this Job did not sin. Job was lamenting the loss of his wealth and his children, and it’s ok for us to do the same. And during this time of mourning, we should turn our eyes back to Jesus and praise God all the same.
Know your godly desires are good.
Psalm 37:4
4 Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.
I don’t believe that this verse means that God will give us whatever we want as long as we are delighting in Him; instead, I think that it means that God will give us desires in our hearts for things that He wants us to desire.
As long as we are abiding in Him and finding our joy in Him alone, He will guide our hearts to things that He wants us to desire; desires that He plans to fulfill.
So know that as long as you are delighting in the Lord and His Word, desires will come to your heart, and those are good, God things. You can still be content with where you are, even if these desires have not been fulfilled yet.
Trust God’s plan and timing.
Proverbs 3:5-6
5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, do not lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.
God’s ways are not our ways, and God’s timing is perfect, whether we think it’s slow or not. It’s not my job to question how God works or when He works.
My job is to trust that He has it all figured out. And when I trust His sovereignty, He’ll guide me on the right path.
When I’m longing for something that isn’t here, I’m not trusting the path that I’m on or the guide that I’m following. I can find contentment in knowing that God will always lead me to where I’m supposed to go.
Dear God. Thank you for your guidance in my life. I am grateful that you are in control and that I can find contentment when I keep my eyes focused on you.
Even in my times of mourning, I can find contentment when I trust in you and your plan for my life. Thank you for your sovereignty. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Life can be hard sometimes, and while happiness is a fleeting emotion, contentment and joy in the Lord can be found when we root ourselves in God’s Word and cling to His truths. We find peace when we keep our minds and hearts on Him, and we can be content when we trust the plans He has for us (Jeremiah 29:11).
