New Year’s Eve Paper Fortunes

We are winding down from Christmas over here and are in that exhausting transition week between Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve.

Our Christmas celebration was wonderful this year, and of course it was busy too. But after all of the presents are unwrapped and Christmas dinner is over, I always feel like I hit a wall of exhaustion and just need to sleep!

In our house, the day after Christmas is usually spent cleaning up. I don’t know how we manage to do it, but our home always seems to look like a windstorm blew through and destroyed every single room. Wrapping paper and opened boxes are scattered around the Christmas tree; brand new toys are strewn from one end of the house to the other; dishes are piled up on every countertop; and the dining table is sticky from candy canes and chocolate.

But who wants to clean their home on Christmas? Probably someone somewhere, but I sure don’t. So we take the day after Christmas as a day for cleaning up and starting the organization process. But we don’t want to forget, another holiday celebration is less than a week away!

This leads me to today’s craft. These New Year’s Eve paper fortunes are the cutest little party favors for any New Year’s Eve celebration! They are super simple and quick to make, so you don’t have to add a lot of time or mess to your week leading up to the holiday. And they are easy enough that the kids can help make them.

Supplies you’ll need:

• Cardstock paper circles

• Paper fortunes

• Glue dots or hot glue gun

Step 1: Cut out your paper circles

To make these New Year’s Eve paper fortunes, you’ll need as many circles as fortunes you’d like. The fun thing about these fortunes is that you can choose any festive cardstock that you’d like. To get in the spirit of glitzy New Year’s, I used a sparkly cardstock in blue and silver.

For this project, I used my Cricut to cut out 3-inch diameter circles. I think this was a decent size, but larger circles might prove to be easier to work with.

If you don’t have a Cricut, you can easily use a lid or other round object to trace circles onto your cardstock and cut out with scissors.

Step 2: Pinch the center of your circle

The next step for folding your paper fortune is to pinch the center of your circle.

You want to gently fold your circle like a taco with the outside of the design facing inwards. Then, gently pinch just the center without creasing the entire fold. This creates the guide for the paper to overlap on itself and create the cookie shape.

Step 3: Fold into the cookie shape

This step can be a little tricky at first, but once you get the hang of it, the paper fortunes fold easily into place.

After pinching the center of the inside of the paper, open the paper back up, rotate the circle so the crease is parallel with your middle finger and thumb, and gently hold the top and bottom of the circle with your middle finger and thumb.

Using your index finger, push in on the crease while you pull your thumb and middle finger in toward each other. The paper will fold over itself to create your cookie shape.

Step 4: Place your glue dot

After you get the paper fortune folded into the cookie shape, open the paper back up and place a glue dot or drop of hot glue just above your crease.

Remove the paper backing if using glue dots.

If you’re using hot glue, you’ll want to do the next step quickly before the glue has a chance to dry and your paper won’t stick together.

For this particular cardstock, I found that the paper did not want to stay together with just one glue dot or small drop of hot glue, so be generous here so it’ll stick together once you’re done.

Step 5: Insert the fortune

Flip over your paper, place your fortune on the inside of your paper, and fold back into the shape of the cookie. Press firmly over your glue dot to ensure it holds the paper fortune in place.

I had fun creating different fortunes to add inside. I found inspiration from scripture, and I also came up with some other funny sayings I thought my family would enjoy.

They would make a cute centerpiece on your New Year’s table, or you could put a bunch of them in a clear glass bowl that your guests can draw from.
