How To Make Tissue Paper Pom Poms

Happy Monday!

Or happy whatever day it is that you’re reading this ;)

We had a very busy weekend with our daughter’s birthday and other events, so I have a really quick and easy craft to make today.

My daughter is a very girly girl, and she loves all things flowers, and pink, and unicorns, and sparkles, and rainbows, so we’ve been making DIY projects to decorate her room in all of the beautiful things that she loves.

One thing we made together is a bouquet of tissue paper pom poms. We hung them from her ceiling with ribbon in varying lengths, and they decorate one corner of her bedroom. The great thing about tissue paper pom poms is that they’re really cheap and easy to make, but you can also customize them in your room’s colors. So for her, we made pink, white, purple, and teal pom poms.

And now I’m going to show you how to make tissue paper pom poms for your own space.

Step 1: Cut and accordion fold the tissue paper.

The first step in how to make tissue paper pom poms is cutting your tissue paper to your desired size.

If you want a large pom pom, you can leave the tissue paper whole. You’ll want to use about 20 pieces of tissue paper, so for the size I made, I used 10 pieces of tissue paper and cut them in half.

I found that the smaller pom poms work out better than the larger ones because they end up looking more full and plush. If your large pom pom doesn’t look full enough, you may need to use more than 20 sheets of tissue paper.

Stack your sheets together, and start accordion folding down the length of the paper.

Fold the edge of the paper up about an inch or two, flip the paper over, fold up about an inch or two, flip the paper over, and repeat along the length of the tissue paper until you make it to the end.

Step 2: Staple the center.

After you’ve made it down the length of your paper, staple the center of your strip to hold everything together.

Because mine was so thick, the staple didn’t quite make it all the way through the paper, so I flipped it over and added a second staple through the other side.

If you want to hang your pom pom, now is a good time to tie your string around the middle of the paper by the staple. You can add it later, but it’s easiest at this step.

Step 3: Trim the ends.

Now you want to trim your ends on both sides. I cut a semi-round edge, but you can also cut it into points or other shapes.

It was difficult for me to cut through the whole thing at once, so I took it in sections and cut one side and then the other to get the whole thing cut.

I do not recommend skipping this step! I forgot to do this on one of my pom poms, and it doesn’t look as fluffy or as finished as the others.

Step 4: Pull apart the paper.

This next step is the most time-consuming of the whole project. Fan out your ends and grab just one single piece of paper to gently pull away from the rest of the paper.

I pull from one side and then flip it over to pull from the other side because I want my pom pom to be a ball. If you want more of a one-sided flower to hang on the wall, only pull your paper from one side.

Alternate around all of the sides until all of the pieces are separated.

Once everything is separated, move around the pom pom and gently fluff and scrunch your paper until it’s the shape you want.
