Giant Paper Flowers

Welcome friends!

My daughter is five, and she is very much into unicorn everything right now. They’re hard to get away from honestly - there are unicorns on everything, so every time we go to the store, she wants something that has a unicorn on it.

I keep seeing these unicorn wall decals with giant paper flowers around the horn and ears, and I thought it would be such a cute addition to her unicorn bedroom, so I got some cardstock and got to work.

Step 1: Cut flower shapes.

To make giant paper flowers, you’ll need several flower shapes in different sizes to layer on top of each other.

If you have a Cricut, this step is really easy. In Design Space, start a new project and click on images. Search for “flower” and click on the filter box next to “Free.”

I have a 12x12 cutting mat, so I placed several of these flowers onto my canvas in various sizes. On one mat, I was able to fit: (3) 2.8” flowers, (2) 4.8” flowers, and (1) 5.8” flower.

If you want to make a larger flower, simply keep going up in size about an inch each time. You’ll need more pieces of cardstock, so play around with what will fit.

Step 2: Fold and glue the center piece.

Start with the center of the flower. I pinched each petal at the top of the center and folded each petal up at the base of the petal around the center.

Next, I glued each petal to the one next to it, alternating which side was glued on top of the next. I continued with this pattern until the entire center was glued together.

Step 3: Curl, fold, and layer.

After your center piece is completed, grab another flower in the same size and fold the petals up around the center. Pinch the tops of each petal the same way you did in the last step.

Glue the center piece into the middle of your second flower, and put some hot glue around the base of the center piece to hold these petals up.

Now you’re going to glue together each of the layers of the flower. Use an extra hot glue stick (or pencil or something else that’s round) to gently curl each petal. I alternated the direction I curled each layer. Some I curled up toward the center and some I curled back away from the center.

You want your last layer to curl up, so keep that in mind as you’re deciding on which direction to curl each layer.

After they’re curled, fold each petal up at the base of each petal. This adds depth and dimension to your flower.

Step 4: Hot glue the layers together.

I glued as I went, but you can also curl and fold each layer and then hot glue everything all at once at the end.

After everything is folded, place a drop of hot glue in the center of the flower and glue it to the next layer.

Keep layering the flower pieces until your flower is your desired size.
